Here is a sword render that I made a while ago. I Just didn't post it untill now.
( I thought that I was going to add more to it but then I changed my mind. )

Here is a close up of the sword, that is in the mount, plus an animated .gif (only because I liked making one / am new to animated .gifs) lol.

I am considering putting a skull, in place of the round end cap, on the bottom of the handle but I am not likely to do that Any time soon.

OK here it is.

Note: I made the disassembled parts ghetto and others cut off but
they should do just fine (I don't have the original separate parts).

First create a polygon for the left of your costume blade.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step1.png
Next create the other.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step2.png
Next rotate the sides as demonstrated.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step3.gif
Snap all the vertices in the center and optimise them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step4.gif
Mirror the object.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step5.gif
The blade should now look like this (or the design that you made).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step6.png
Fill in the blank spots.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step7.gif
Now that the blade is finished lets start on the ax. Make this shape below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step8.png
Extrude the edges out.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step9.png
Now at this view.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step10.png
Move the selected vertices left.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step11.png
Creat the desired shape you want for the hole.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step12.png
Delete the front serface and move the shapes over.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step13.png
Delete the shapes serfaces and create new serfaces around the left over virtecies.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step14.gif
Switch to this view.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step15.png
Mirror like so.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step16.png
You should now have this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step17.png
Fill in the empty spots with new serfaces and then it will look like this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step18.png
Creat that cilinder.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step19.png
Select the edge serfaces.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step20.png
And do a Vortex - creat convex/hull .
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step21.png
The handel is easy just creat a polygon for the desired shape.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step22.png
Then do a object - relvolve.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/paintedsnake/tut/step23.png
Well thats it. Just peice the parts together and your done. Hope this helps

i see this all of the time, never have more than 4 verticles per surface, since it screws up when exporting to 3ds and tends to go to more polies

12 segments (with 360 degres of rotation on the Y axis) should be ok.
The more you draw your polyline outline far from the Y axis, the more the final result will look big ... So if you want something smaller just draw your polyline closer to the Y axis ;)

Also draw a polyline not a polygon (as bill), and after the revolve operation go to object/optimize surfaces.
This will remove any unwanted surfaces from the handle.
