View Full Version : AC3D hates Paint Shop Pro, but likes Photoshop

Everytime I try to use a Paint Shop Pro v8.0 created targa file in AC3D, it causes an error and hangs up the AC3D (which will begin to use 98% of my CPU power, which is 2.4 Gig Intel Pentium 4). Click on thumbnail shown below to see info on the PSP 8 targa file ie: created as 64x64, 200ppi image and then saved as 24 bit Targa with RLE compression. Also, click on other thumbnail to see screen shot of AC3D pop-up error message and how the image is displayed on the simple box cube model when it crashes.

Oddly enough, if I take this same PSP created/saved targa file and load it into Photoshop and then "save-as" same name targa as 24 bit, RLE compressed, this image will load perfectly into AC3D and cause no problems. Isn't that weird.

I can't see a upload image or send attachment on this messaging system.
The free image host I use does not allow targa files either. Using them might not be the best way to send them to you anyway as they might alter the image at their end before storing or something.

Hmmm, my email address is greydog2004@yahoo.com, I also have a POP3 email at bleppington@shaw.ca. I could send it using either of those, but I don't have any email address for you.

In the mean time, I tried loading the images again into AC3D and can report the following as well. (hey, can I get a job as a product tester for you? I will work for a $1 an hour and report all my findings very vigorously. "

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
New twist on the loading of PSP 8 targa file. This attempt did load it without crashing, but the

texture was all currupt in the AC3D xyz/3d display windows. So, after loading the PSP 8 targa, I

attempted to close AC3D. A pop-up saying "There are unsaved changes. Exit AC3D without saving?" and I

press the "yes" button and then this error came up:

"Exception occured in command save_settings
Last Error (not necessarily then problem): Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

So then I press the "OK" button and get another pop-up:

"Exception occured in the main code of AC3D
Last Error (not necessarily the problem): Invalid window handle."

So then I press the "OK" button on that pop-up and then AC3D begins to cycle using 100% of my CPU

capabilities.

I had to end the program using Ctrl/Alt/Del (Windows Task Manager ----> End Process. Then when I

loaded AC3D again, all my custom settings were gone.

Tried it again from scratch to load PSP8 targa (same image). It loaded but was currupt in views, but

did not crash yet. Soon as I click on the background to clear the cube's selection...BOOM...I get this

pop-up: "Exception occured in the main code of AC3D (not necessarily the problem): program completed

successfully".

The Photoshop pic is the same pic created in PSP8 but just saved-as a new targe using it's 24 bit and

RLE compression, but it does not cause problems or crash the AC3D or my computer.

I already mentioned something like this a while ago.

AC3D doesn't like TGA's created with PSP8 or PSP9
If you save a TGA with PSP7 everything is fine.

Once I read that PSP8 has a buggy TGA saving routine, wich will be corrected with update to PSP8.10
I did upgrade, but it did not help.

So I installed PSP9 Demo thinking it would be correct here. But doesn't work...

Finaly realy seems to be a problem with AC3D, because the Targetware-Engine, I make my models for, has no problems loading and mapping the PSP-TGA's to my model.

I have had exactly the same problem with one particular jpg file - a moon map. I get the same error message when I try to load the texture. I opened it up in PSP8 and saved it in various other formats (including targa)and they load ok. It's just the jpg that won't.

The file concerned loads perfectly well in Milkshape so I know there's nothing wrong with the file itself.

It is definitely a problem with AC3D.

I have other jpg planet maps from the same source that all load ok incidentally.

Has this problem been addressed or should one just avoid paint shop 8.0 :?:
