View Full Version : Access Violation Errors

I've been getting this type of error with alarming frequency since the 6.0 Beta, and the gold 6.0 seems to have it too:

Steps to recreate:

Open a model.
Unselect all objects by clicking in a window's dead space.
Zoom top view window (or 3D view window) to detail an area I want to work on.
Select Surface Mode.
De-select "Select Through" mode.
Drag to select surfaces.

*CRASH*

Here you can see the dotted line over the surfaces I was trying to drag/select. I'm trying to align these with the similar area above it.

Certain models just develop this "squirreliness" at some point in their development, and I don't know what's causing it. They're all relatively low poly models (under 4000 polys). But at some point, I learn to SAVE almost every time I complete a successful operation, because I never know what will cause the next one. This is just one of them, and it's the most "repeatable".

Any suggestions?

It appears that select-through has problems on some graphics cards. I recommend not to use that (and also don't use shift+control+select) until we find a fix.

Are you running in a 32 bit display?

No, 24-bit display.

Are you saying to always keep Select Through checked (its default)?

I suppose I can work around this if that's the problem....

Can you switch to 32 bit? That should fix it.

If it doesn't don't untick select-though until we issue a fix.

Getting same prob, whenever you try to select multiple surfaces. Will work on first group; then do operation, try to select 2nd group. *CRASH*. (Access violation). Occurs *every* time.

Select-through is not checked, video is 32-bit.

Basically renders the software unusable.

All,

I also have the issue of segmentation faults with 'Select Through' unselected (running on Linux).
I also agree with Stiglr's comment "Certain models just develop this 'squirreliness' at some point in their development..."
I have probably six hours into the model in question, with "Select Through" selected/deselected. Today, using "Select Through" deselected causes a segmentation fault every time.

The particulars;
Mandriva 2006
X86_64 kernel 2.6.12.
Dual Opterons w/4 Gb ram
Ati Radeon X1800
Xorg 6.9
OpenGL version string: 2.0.5814 (Ati 8.25.18 - The latest version).

---------Update---------
I had narrowed this problem down to the libgl that is part of ati's drivers. The update to version 8.29.6 eliminated my 'select through' issue. I've also had no issues with 'corrupted' models since my initial post. Probably newbieness.

We have done some work on this. It appears to be a problem on some graphics cards. We are awaiting some feedback before we release a fixed version.

If you experience a crash with select-through off, please don't switch it off. ;)

If you feel that something has happened to your model and that it's somehow become corrupt - causing a crash, please send the file to me so I can look into it.

FYI ---

My access violation errors, which occurred consistently when selecting surfaces, have miraculously vanished. The miracle resulted from killing CLI.exe.

I notice that all the reports of these errors involve ATI graphics cards. CLI.exe is the ATI command line interface --- the utility that sits in the system tray and monitors the vid card. At times there would be 3 instances of that process running. I killed it, and removed it from the registry. No more access violation errors. Worked for over a week now on the same model that was generating the errors previously, and haven't had one.

Others may want to try it --- worked for me.
