Groups?

What are these supposed groups, how does one get to them, and do they really exist?

Sure. Assuming you mean AC3D groups, of course, from the manual:

"A group is a special object that has no surfaces or vertices but has other objects as children. Groups are created by selecting two or more objects and selecting ‘Group’ from the edit menu, or toolbar. Use the ‘Ungroup’ function to separate the objects."

You can visually see the grouping of a document using Tools -> Hierarchy View.
