No external edges?

I subdivided a few shapes and attempted to extrude multiple surfaces at the same time. what ended up happening was that i got an error message which stated that there was an:

Extrude failed: there are no external surface edges

message. What does this mean and how can i fix it?

Select just part of the object, not the whole lot.

Extrude will add extra geometry at the edges of the selection

It's hard to see the total extent of your selection from this image. Can you post another?
