High poly counts are a fact of life with 3d printers since they don't do any smooth shading, either.

I've been playing with different tiling looking for a way to generate textured surfaces, e.g., hammer marks. The semi-randomness has been eluding me so far, but I've generated a nice diamond grip pattern as well as egg-carton shapes.
