Another way to grow an object is to select the object, click on "dup" (for duplicate) and then scale the duplicate like 90%,90%,90% (x,y,z). With a check in "select through", you can use the cursor to select both the inside and outside object and then group them. Then assign the group a color or texture and make it partially transparent. This will allow objects inside the object to be seen through the partially transparent object.
