No, with the x file exporter it is NOT necessary to duplicate 2-sided surfaces !
With the actual version 1.6 of the x export plugin you can select 'Consider 1S/2S' and the duplication is done automatically ( only for 2-sided surfaces of course and only in the generated x file - the AC3D model is not changed with this option ).
