which would you say is a better renderer, and why?

so how would it be possible to render the wine glass on say a jpeg, and have it be part of the background, say sitting on a desk or something?

I know when you render with pov-ray, it gives it a background color, so I tried to use gimp, but not sure how I can get rid of the background color and have it use the background on the picture.

I figured it would be something the renderer would have to do. which calls in another problem, positioning the glass in a certain spot on the picture.

sorry for all my newb questions, wish i could find a book on this type of thing.
