For those interested by textures RAM consumption, here is something I've grabbed months ago :

16² = 768 bytes
32² = 3 kb
64² = 12.3 kb
128² = 49.2 kb
256² = 196.6 kb
512² = 768.4 kb
1024² = 3.9 mb
...
As you can see, memory usage grows exponentially.
If you use a 512x256, the card will internally process it as 2 256² = ca 400kb.
better than a 512² with wasted space on it (ca 770 kb)..
