Have you ever tried Microdem 8.0 alpha? It opens SRTM heightfields. Do you have a source so I can try? You can export OBJ and DXF-meshes. Or DXF-contours.

The only way I opened 90mtr 3 arcsec SRTM data is via GeoTiff. But those data were raw, not corrected in any way. A lot of data by the way.
