Select "Surface" in the "Select" area. In one of the orthographic views, click on the first surface, press and hold the shift key and then click on additional surfaces OR for adjacent surfaces, point the cursor at one of the surfaces, press the left mouse button and while holding it down, move the cursor over the additional surfaces desired. In the 3D view, hold down the control key in addition to the shift key for point and click selection; just the control key for drag-selection.
