I think the default AC3D scale is 100 pixels to one unit. If you scale the imgge in a paint program you make end up with a very large picture which will slow things down.

Best to use alt+control+up/down to scale the background images from within AC3D until it fits your grid. (alt+cursorkeys moves the background image).
