Ahh!!! there it is! Thank you!!! the "surface material" number shows up in the middle of the bottom status bar for a few seconds after it hi-lights. The trick is:

1) you must be in surface mode,
2) you must select only one surface.

if you group several surfaces, the surface material number doesn't show up.

Its not the lunar lander, I'm working on an Abrams M1 tank I downloaded. Very nice model.
