I have a question about this video:

I have followed the detail closely, but when I go to rotate (revolve) I get a wine glass made out of a hexagon, and it does not become smooth unless I use the Subdivide + button at the top menu bar. (In the video the user does not need to use the subdivide button, how come?)
After that I open my UV mapping and convert it, like the video does, but my UV map is not a perfect square and does not fit within the black outline box.
What am I doing wrong?
