You can see the surfaces selected are outlined in green. The green box shows you the area that's selected (which you can drag/size if you like).
The info at the top of the control panel tells you how many surfaces are selected.
In this case you have one surface (a triangle) selected. A 'surface' in AC3D is a line or polygon.
