I tried a number of other 3D software packages and they all failed to load the file (most crashed).

It works with AC3D this PC which has 2gig ram. Perhaps you need to add some more main memory? (this PC is also running the same OS as you)

1.6 million polys is a lot to handle all at once (for any PC/software) so it might be best to split it into multiple objects.
