I think that you might have choosen the wrong axis to revolve around.

Draw a circle/ellipse in the front view.
With your circle still selected in object mode, go to object / revolve.
Choose the following parameters :
degres = 360
axis = Y
segments = 12
offset = 0.0

then push the revolve button.
