If it's a poly shape you're using for one of the operands, perhaps try selecting the vertices of your shape and making a convex hull object or Ordered Surface object out of it, then involving it in a Boolean operation.

Sorry, I shoul dhave been more specific. I have used a line / polyline to extrude an object (rotation or via the extrude tool) and I am left with a polygon object. I can triangulate its surfaces (or not) but I get this error when I try to do the boolean operation.

In my newly extruded polygon object, I can see a white line where the poly line was but I can't seem to remove it from the object. I suspect it is this that is the problem.
