Do you mean textures rather than colors/materials?

materials should be fine. Textures are usually loaded into 3DS but I don't think the 3DS view windows preview the textures like in AC3D (correct me if I'm wrong). You may need to edit the materials or render the model to actually see the textures in 3DS.
