I use Gentoo - its installation process custom-compiles everything for your machine, ensuring an optimal configuration. It's relatively painless as compared to compiling individual packages. It does automatic dependency checking and auto downloading/building of the required packages.

I'm not sure it's ideal as a representative of the general Linux population, though.
