Hi Paul --- pending any resolution on this suggestion, you may wish to try the QuickGrid utility at
http://bellsouthpwp.net/a/t/atomicd/ac3dplug/index.html.
You can set your gridlines to varying custom sizes and switch between them with the floating palette interface.
It's not exactly what you're asking for, but may be helpful.
