I don't think this will solve your problem, but illustrates what I'm seeing. If the transparent object is at the head of the heirarchy, it does not appear to be see-through. If it is at the tail of the list, objects can be seen through it. In the 3D window itself, Anti-Alias is checked; and this makes a difference for me. If I open a file and don't check Anti-Alias, my 3D view won't show *anything at all*.
