There is a way to hide a surface, but it requires a "add-in" script. Search for "Surface Hiding" and then click on the post called: SCRIPT: Surface Hiding. This was posted by "foxa" on 20th October 2008.

The only other way, that I know of, would be to fragment the object containing the surface. That will make the surface in question an object which will be something that you can hide using the regular UI controls. It will also make objects of all of the other surfaces in the original object so you will have to merge all of those surfaces when you are done. Using the script mentioned above is much more convenient.
