Question Extrude along 3D path produces an unexpected result

While I was trying to figure out how to model a sheet metal screw (which has a tapered end), I discovered that Extrude along a 3D path produces a very different result than Extrude along a 2D path. I have attached two images. The first image shows a simple profile for a screw thread and a 2D path in the upper part of the image. In the lower part of the image is the result of Extruding the "thread" along the 2D path. Notice that the pointed side of the "thread" always points outward.

In the second image, I use the same "thread" object, but I have defined a simple path in 3 dimensions. The lower part of the image shows the result. Notice that the pointed side of the "thread" points outward at first, but then twists around until it is pointed down by the time it is extruded to the end of the path.
