Yes, this is definitely something wrong with the Boolean feature.

For the life of me, doing what the author describes never results in a nice clean hole. You get a mess of "inside surfaces" forming a tunnel in what should be dead space inside the object you cut from. Often, even though the entire object cut OUT of the other operand clearly spans beyond both its sides, you have to select and clear out surfaces from what should be the hole.

The Booleans flat out need to be upgraded so that they WORK right.
