A couple of quick notes.
1) Even the "expensive" programs have problems with booleans, and if you are going to sub divide your model fuggeddaboudit. Booleans do not work for proper edge flow and quad surfaces.

2) If you are going to use booleans in AC3D scale you model up to a larger size, use the boolean and then scale it back down (I learned that one from Andy).
