Postscript output and Geomview Export
Please help,
I would like to output my model to a postscript or eps file. I could not find an easy way to do this in AC3D, but I did find that Geomview can output to a postscript file. Unfortunately, I am having trouble exporting my file to Geomview v 1.8.1: When I use ac3d to export to VRML, Geomview complains: Unknown field "IndexedLineSet" when I try to convert from VRML to OOGL A few years back I was able to get Geomview to read VRML files, but now something has changed. Any suggestions would be great to either: 1) generate a postscript file using AC3D, or 2) getting my ac3d file into Geomview. Thanks! Dave Rector *:^) |

Hi Dave,
Does a VRML file go into Geomview if you don't have any lines, only polygons? Andy |

From a bit of Googling - Geomview's file format (.off) - which AC3D imports, supports only polygons, not lines.
A quick peak at the .off importer shows that a .off exporter would be easy to write but I think you should probably try exporting only polygons as VRML and putting those files into Geomview. Andy |

Thanks Andy,
Removing the lines worked. Now I need to figure out how to convert my model into poly ... and look right. Is there any other way to get a postscript rendering of the view from ac3d? The Geomview postscript output is nice. Dave Rector *:^) |

Andy,
I just noticed a couple more things. The Geomview postscript snapshot does not render objects with transparency properly. Also, the edges between surfaces are not very smooth. So perhaps I am not going to be able to use postscript at all? I was attempting to create a file that would be smaller and more portable than a high resolution tiff for electronic publication, but it looks like I am going to have to use tiff. Dave Rector *:^) |

How about using png? It's non-lossy isn't it?

Andy,
Actually, I was trying to generate a portable vector based graphic (such as postscript) which would not be resolution bound with minimal file size. Dave Rector *:^) |

Hi all - been at the beach for a week and just catching up - I use swift 3D which takes several 3D formats and outputs to several 2D vector formats including Flash. The AI output works best for me. You can download a tryout at www.erain.com. It is a bit pricey, but it works well.
