So, we found out lately that Xplane have started creating/almost created their new Sea King from a MSFS model and have made a good job from what I can see...So me and a fellow Flight Gear user have decided to challenge ourselves to see if we can get ours up to par with theirs if not make it better.
I took the model back to the drawing board and started adding details details details to the external for now. My colleague on FG is doing all the animation XML and creating a brand new flight dynamics model as we have a full flight manual to work from. Here are a few screen shots from all the work done in AC3D ![]() The image above just shows how I work. Red=parts to be animated, BLUE=things to do with those areas or to add more details, YELLOW=just a colour surface. ![]() I modelled a new main gear as the old was just 2 cylinders ![]() A newly modelled rear tail gear ![]() A radome added on top, sliding door was in the wrong position and has now been moved to correct this. |

Looks great. How do you animate the parts for Flightgear?

Hi Andy, all Flightgear animations are done through XML files. What we do or the animator himself (I can't do it to save my life) is use co-ordinates from the objects and revolves them around the XYZ axis.
It's quite tedious sometimes and to see how the animation works you have to load FG test it, see how it looks and tweak it if needs be. With this one we are "hopefully" going to have every button clickable and to place them again it's through XML and to say that there maybe some 300+ buttons it's going to be a daunting task but the person who does it enjoys it.....I think I have the easiest task of modelling ![]() |
