Best Way To Add Edges?
What is the best way to add additional edges (faces) to geometry, using the knife tool?
Thanks! |

Re: Best Way To Add Edges, Additional Surfaces
I know this seems silly but please can anyone help with this issue? Do I have to add vertex then connect them with an edge? Thank you!~

Re: Best Way To Add Edges?
To clarify... are you asking if the knife tool is the best way to add edges, or how to use the knife?
As far as if the knife is the best way to add edges, I think it depends on the situation. For ragged edges you want to make straight, it's very handy. If you're just looking for an extra set of vertices to work with, I'm partial to "divide loop" and "extrude" myself. As far as how to use the knife, I usually draw an oversized cube and use it as the knife. There's an alternate knife at supercoldmilk.com that will let you use a rectangle instead of a cube. I like that knife better, because then I simply use the rectangle as a dividing plane which is very straight-forward. |

Re: Best Way To Add Edges?
Thank you Lisa, see the drawing. So lets say I need to add a couple edges to a box to add more detail.

Re: Best Way To Add Edges?
Hi Merrie,
There are a few ways to do this - the first one that comes to mind would be to use the built-in Boolean->Knife tool. You can create a second box that intersects your original box where you want the cuts to appear, then select the original box, then select the "cutter" box, then finally select Object->Boolean->Knife. In the screenshot I attached, the "short" box is the cutter box. Good luck |
