UV Mapping for Single Object
Is is possible to assign material coordinates on a single object or surface so that you can create a create a uv map that diplays more than one texture on that surface? (Hope I'm using the right lingo, am a bit new at this.)

Yes. Just select SURFACES in Surface mode (as opposed to selecting the entire object) and assign these surfaces different materials than other surfaces or the object as a whole.
I don't think you could assign the various surfaces to map from different texture GRAPHIC FILES, but you could assign the surfaces themselves to very different areas of the same graphic file through the TCE, if that makes any sense. But, the materials themselves could be edited to display different properties of transparency, color, shininess, etc.
