exporting hi-res images from AC3D
Hi All,
a couple of months ago I stared to use AC3D in order to produce some 3D images of WWI aircraft to add to my new book project. So far I wasn't able to exporting my work in a jpg or tiff format in an adeguate resolution. I tried to create the airframe of a ni.11 (just as a test) in AC3D, then converted it in .3ds format in order to render it insketchup and then convert it in TIFF format for my book. Oddly when I import the .3ds file in sketchup something happen (see the pic attached) It seems that I'm not able to color and render some of the objects/surfaces.... did anyone of you faced and solved the same problems? or has someone of you any alternative procedure to suggest me? thanks in advance for your attention cheers Paolo Miana |

Re: exporting hi-res images from AC3D
I'm gonna take a guess here.
First off, the .3ds file format should be banned from the planet. Texture names and material names must be less than 8 characters long. When I map an object, and the material name, or the texture name (eg. airplanewing.bmp) is longer than 8 characters(8char + 3char for the file extension), I lose the mapping and the material name gets changed when using the .3ds file format. This is why many are crying out in the night for the ability to import/export using the .dae collada format ............... please I beg of you ............. give us the ability to import/export via collada. Also, the .3ds file format has a nasty way of screwing up the smoothing on your mesh as normal information gets lost. Last edited by Toronto; 3rd June 2010 at 04:44 PM. |

Re: exporting hi-res images from AC3D
You have to take care of your UVs mapping when you intend to export your model to 3ds, because it doesn't support discontinuous UVs (ie it breaks your model's geometry where UVs are not continuous (that's why you usually have more vertices in a 3ds file)).

Try to find the OBJ import/export plugin for SU. It works much better.
