HELP i can't set textures

Can you provide all of the steps you're trying? For example:

1. Create a cube
2. While the cube is selected, select the menu option "Object | Texture | Load texture..." and open the texture file you wish to use.
3. If you want to see the texture in the 3D view, make sure "Texture" is checked in the 3D menu and "Wireframe" us unchecked. { Do the same under the "Ortho" menu if you want to see the texture in your front/side/top/etc views. }

If all you see when doing this is a black box, make sure your "headlight" is on (3D or Ortho menu).
