I am wondering if anyone has made a plug-in that will fragment the 3D object and then group all of the surfaces by material so that each material has a separate group. If anyone has any info on how to do this that would be very helpful! Thanks

In surface mode, when you right-click on a material (material tab at the bottom left), you can select all surfaces using that material. You can then do a "surface/cut away object" and all these surfaces will be one object.
If you really need to work with groups (?), then you will have to tweak a little bit what I've just said. HTH

Thank you, that is kind of how I am doing it now. I'm just looking for a way to automate the process. Press a button and have the whole 3D shape split up by colors I'm not always sure what colors are used because AC3D keeps adding to the list of materials. Another wish would be to remove unused materials from the material list.

I'd go along with that.
