thx for the quick texturing tutorial Lisa, i thought i could only remap complete objects so i have been struggling all day yesterday slicing my model in half and trying to texure the front and back of my model as different objects and afterwards welding them back together.....lol. this is going to make my life a whole lot easier as i could feel frustration growing quickly doing it my way...

Well, what you need to understand is when texturing in any 3d program such as Ac3d, 3dstudiomax,cinema4 and the likes (uv-mapping that is for exporting and importing into another render) you need to tweak the materials in the prog you use to render it in. The uv-mapping dont contain any info on reflectivity and specularity and shinines. Not the right info anyway. So this is something you need to do inside the material editor in, as you are using now, Bryce. Here is a quicky I modeled and uv-mapped in Ac3d and rendered in Bryce. And I tweaked the mats.

geez, that took you what, a couple minutes? That was quick
So you textured the whole thing, and have materials on it? How did you get those bands like that? I painted bands, then they kind of blended in with the rest of the pole. Or did you model them in? Thats a neat texture you used for the top |

I just uv-mapped the middle cylinder. They are not modeled in. The rest is materials from Bryce. You need to raise the reflectivity in Bryce on the uv-mapped parts. This is the pictures I used as texture in Ac3d. The gray bands in Ac3d. Black bands are added in Bryce.

why did you need one with gray bands and one with black bands?
So you have to add the textures in the renderer also? |

You have to add textures in Bryce to different channels in the material editor like the bump map and if you need it, the ambiance channel. And you dont Have to use both black and gray. You can just use the gray if you like But as I have said before, Renderosity and the Bryce forum, or this site has some nice tuts in Bryce http://www.brycetech.com/ Those are a good source for learning the ways of the render Here we just model and uv-mapp

Those UVs look pretty good. Sometimes, to fight distortion, you just need to play around with the different mapping modes to find one that works well for the shape you have.
As tbd was saying, many renders let you have more than one map. For example, I use specular\gloss maps a lot in my work. A gloss map lets you control which areas are more or less "shiny" by making very shiny areas white, and less shiny areas black. This is a really great tutorial for understanding the different kinds of maps: http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorial...ect/leaf_1.asp The tutorial is aimed at max and photoshop, but the concepts are easily applied to other renderers. |
