Re: How to use the poly line tool
The line surface we started with is still there, so switch to surface mode, select the line, and delete it.

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Then, in object mode, mirror +X, subdivide twice, and commit the subdivisions. I also scaled and re-centered the object.

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Now I locked the fuselage object so I can still see it, but don't have to worry about selecting it, and drew the basic door outline. You can see it draws in the center of the object. That's o.k. for now.

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Like I did for the body itself, I extruded the edges in vertex mode. Pull them well past the skin of the body. Then I went back and deleted the original polyline face.

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Then I added and committed a couple of subdivisions to get a nice organic shape.

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Then unlock the fuselage. Select the door extrusion and set it as the knife in the Knife Tool.

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Select the fuselage and execute the Knife Tool. Delete the door extrusion...

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Since the Knife didn't slice all the surfaces to make a nice door I just deleted the spare vertexes that are 'inside' the door. If I had intended to make a door to fill the hole I would have copied them into a new object first... But my objective tonight was simply to make the door hole, and here it is:

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Hey,
Thanks for that GREAT tutorial! You should post more! How would you make a liner in the fuselage? If you know what I mean? A thickness to the skin? |

Re: How to use the poly line tool
Thanks, time is somewhat limited at the moment.
Quote:
duplicate it and flip the duplicate normals so the faces face in, (interior) scale it down on the width and height axis... Lock the interior, in vertex mode select the door outline on the exterior (loop select should work well here) then extrude the edges inward. (ctr+e) Try to line them up with the interior door opening... You could also extrude the interior door opening outward and have two extrusion meet in the middle... Ron P.S., It might be a good idea to texture map the exterior before you duplicate it so the interior will be mapped, too. P.P.S., I didn't save the original model so I won't do accompanying images... |
