Default Newbie: Extrude along path problem

My daughter and I are new to 3D and AC3D, and really impressed with AC3D.

The primary interest is designing mesh things for Second Life. We're acquainted with basic prim building in Second Life.

Here's the problem.

I want to create the cord of a necklace and am interested in learning any methods.

Preferably, I'd like to be able to increase/decrease the diameter without affecting the overall width or height, like what happens when holding CTRL and re-sizing the object.

This is what I tried.

I used the included Second Life Avatar for reference and then used the circle tool to create an ellipse around the avatar's neck.

I then selected and moved vertices to better follow the contour of the avatar neckline. (As a newbie, I don't know how much of that is truly necessary yet)

I then created a second ellipse and rotated it, and then extruded it along the path of the first ellipse.

The "cord" formed, but a gap is left and I don't know why.

I also don't know how I would change the diameter of the cord.

Any help is very appreciated.

Pull one end and align it with the other. Snap together the vertices and optimize to remove dupliciates.

Andy, is this a bug in the feature? I have this happen as well when I create what should be a closed shape.

@dlant: unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to change the diameter short of creating a new "circle" and doing a new extrusion along a path.

@Andy & Stiglr: Thanks. Before you replied, I did pull one of the ends to the other and selected vertices one at a time, each one across from the other, on the other open end, then used "Snap Together." It worked fine, but just thought there might be an automatic way to accomplish it.

@Andy: I did try your suggestion, but it made that end snap into what looks like a sharpened pencil. I then selected "Optimize Vertices" but it still looked the same. I then undid that and selected all vertices on both open ends, chose Snap Together, and I ended up with two "sharpened pencils" point to point. Maybe I did something wrong....

I assume my solution is okay or is there something I'm missing? ...just trying to learn.

When using snap together in a small area, you likely need to use "snap by distance", set to a low value, so that only vertices VERY close together will snap together (such as nearly overlapping pairs created by dragging them to proximity). The "point" that resulted was because you selected all the vertices in the area and snapped them together.

If you 'extrude edges' before you pull, you get an extra set of vertices and faces. Its mapped to ctrl+e.
