The over all design is rather Interesting. I wouldn't scrap it you could keep the design and possible make a new one out of it.

But with that many objects I can see why ac3d would have problems.

I've downloaded your model just by curiosity, and I understand now why you run into performance problems with the whole model ...
That single landing gear already slows down a little bit my computer

I am trying to simplify the landinggear a little bit. Need to merge down some of the parts to get the object count down as well.
