I think it would be better to stick to Solar System Transport (SST). IMHO

Folks, apologies for not posting anything for a few days. I have encountered a major catastrophe. My desktop computer with my files and software has died. And it looks terminal. No idea what is wrong but it won't boot up properly. So I can't model anything. However, I appreciate the comments from WJgameart and donamy. I will try to get it fixed ASAP and get this model finished. (Ithnk I agree with you donamy - Solar System Transport works better.

Thanks LumpTom. I am pleased to say I have bought a new computer (my last one was over 10 years old and was really struggling vbefore it 'died'). Unforrtunately I have lost my AC3D software so I am about to purchase another copy and then I will be able to get this project finished. By the way, your Avatar skeleton is looking very impressive. Looking forward to seeing some more of your work on it when you get back to it.

Ok, six months ago I was merrily building a 'solar system transportation vehicle' when my computer crashed - big style. I thought I had salvaged everything but sadly no. My work, software, eveything was gone. It has taken me a while to get back up to speed but here we go again. Rather than try to recreate the ship that has been posted in the previous photographs I started again, using the same idea but making use of the lessons I learnt during the last build.

First up is the Command module with the flight deck.

The Flight deck above does exactly what it says on the tin. It is the command centre for all ship's monitoring and operation. However, this is a much bigger ship than just the command centre. The flight deck docking ring, (below), attaches the command module to the rest of the ship.

One of the most useful sequences I use for adding a lot of detail very quickly is 'duplicate, mirror, rotate'.

Draw an object. Make sure it is perfectly centred along the axis you want to work around. Duplicate it. Mirror it around the axis of your choice. In my example I have used the Y axis. The two cylinders will now be one object. Duplicate the object (in this case the two cylinders) and rotate 90 degrees. Experiment with each axis and with the actual number of degrees until you build up a nicely complex piece of model.

Next up is the part of the ship that connects the command module to the habitat deck. This started life as a cylinder around which I applied detail using the 'duplicate, mirror, rotate' technique mentioned above. Once I have applied detail using AC3D's assistance I then apply individual extra's to break up the surface of the model in a slightly more random way.

Its been a few weeks since I added anything to this model, so I think it is about time I thought about finishing it. Any space vehicle that is going to carry a crew through the solar system at sub-light speeds will have to have a practical solution for artificial gravity. The good old centrifugal hub does the trick. As I want to keep my design as 'realistic' and practical as possible I have decided to use a centrifugal ring.
