Bathroom Sink

My new project consist of making an house for my favorite 3d chat site. Am in the process of making the bathroom, got the toilet made (in AC3D), and the shower(in VRML), now it is time for the bathroom sink, consisting of half a sphere, with an rectangle set on top. Cut out the center of the retangle to match the outside of the sphere. Now; The question, how do I connect the two objects toegether at the edges, so when I smooth it it will smooth uniformly?
