Default Smoothness

Is there anyway to retain smoothness on export of meshes? When I export them into any format they have lost smoothness and look square.

Do you mean subdivisions? If so, use Object->commit-subdivisions before exporting.

If you mean the general smoothing (using normals and crease angles), try setting everything to be flat (set surface type flat on left of control panel). That will show you the real shape. It depends on what you are doing with the file on how many 'real' surfaces you'll need to make it look smooth. e.g. if you are 3D printing, you probably want to add more surfaces on curves to make it smoother and less polygonal when printed.
