Red face Slicing

Hello, there!
I have made up a tube (not bad, eh?) and I want to slice it with a rectangle (created as such, that is as a surface) using the boolean "Knife" operation.
I get a formal protest from AC3D, which says that for such an operation the second object (i.e. the rectangle) should not have "open edges". What is an open edge, by the way? I have tried optimizing the vertices on the rectangle, without result.
Can you help?
Thanks,
Thierry

Dennis old knife plugin is less fussy about "open edges", I still use it a lot :

Now if your "tube" is a cylinder, using the divide loop plugin (again by Dennis) could also work.
