Default Moving along the normal vector

I've just discovered that we can move surfaces along their normal vector by using the "+" and "-" keys ... It seems that it's written nowhere in the help file (?).

And the distance for each move can be entered in the settings.

Just in case it could be useful for someone.

I'm having trouble visualizing this concept... can you explain it better, or perhaps post a screen shot of htis?

Other things...

Is there a way to resize objects in the TCE while maintaining the current proportions (constraining)? I find I waste a lot of time trying to get objects to fit on a texture only because when I resize them to fit, the object doesn't stay exactly in proportion as I drag the handles.

Here's a rectangle created on the front view then rotated by -45 on the Y axis.
The llittle pink line indicates the surface's normal vector (basically the direction the surface faces) :

Selecting that surface ...

... then pressing a couple of time the "+" key from the keyboard

has moved that surface away in the direction it is facing.

No more, no less

Try pressing "ctrl" when you drag the handles.

Ah, now I understand the original concept.

Not too sure about Ctrl for constraining proportions...I'll have to try it. It seems I have tried that, but to no effect. Same with using Ctrl, Shift or Alt keys to move a vertice along one axis only. It's supposed to work that way, but for some reason it doesn't... at least for me. I can hold the key down and move the mouse and watch the vertice move all over...

I guess I need to make a concerted effort to try this out and make certain that it works or doesn't...

I think it only works in surface mode when resizing.

can't you resize it in object mode as well?

There's no object mode in the TCE.
Stiglr is just talking about UVs (the unwrapped surfaces displayed in the TCE when you hit F10).
