New guy, hopefully simple question

Hi, I've just gotten AC3D. Love the program. I have what I hope is a simple problem; but I haven't been able to get it to work yet. I'm messing around with making a fishing boat from the front, side, and top views. The way I was doing it was making polylines of the cross-sections and then I was going to make polygons between the vertexes (putting a skin over them). I can't get the polygon tool to work with nearsnap to snap the poly to the vertexes I've already got. The polygon is placed off in space. I've messed with the settings for the nearsnap but no luck. I've got to be doing something stupid, can anyone help, please? Thanks for your time.
