Default Forming object to the surface of another object

Hi. NEWWWBIE here.

I have a cylinder 1" in diameter. I have a butterfly 1/2" x 3/4" x 1/16" that I want to form around the cylinders surface so that the butterfly looks like or becomes a part of the cylinder. Can anyone help me with this problem??

Many thanks in advance.

Bob

Ah... that's actually one of the trickier things to do!

What I'd probably do is slice the butterfly vertically using the knife tool, evenly spacing each slice and making it so each slice is the same width as the cylinder. Then, grab all the vertices past the "joint" (slice) and from the top view, rotate the wing segment so it lines up with the first cylinder slice. Next, deselect the vertices that were lined up in the previous action, leaving the rest of the wing in your selection. Repeat the rotate and deselect until all of the slices are lined up with the cylinder.

The other thing you could try--and I'm not sure how well this would work--would be to extrude the butterfly until it intersected with the side of the cylinder and then boolean the extruded butterfly with a copy of the cylinder. As long as your butterfly was flat in the first place this *should* give you a butterfly cut-out, although the boolean tools can be a bit touchy.

Lisa,

One other question and I'll work on what you suggested. I cannot figure out how to deselect??? I have watched the tutorials and I see them deselect, but I have yet to see how they do that.

Sorry for the silly question, but I am new.

Thanks for your help.

No problem! Shift plus right mouse button deselects.

I find I use deselect *alot*, especially when I have tight geometry. It's often a lot easier to select everything and get rid of what I don't want then it is to get my mouse in all the grooves and wrinkles.

Thumbs up Re: Forming object to the surface of another object

Well, darn it. I thought I had tried every combination of keys and mouse buttons there was.

Thanks again Lisa.
