Default Importing AC3D exports to Cool 3D Production Studio

Hi all;

I seem to have a problem with the object transfer between AC3D and Ulead's 3D Production Studio. When I create and export a AC3D derived object to 3D Studio format and try to import the resultant .3DS model to Cool 3D Pro. Studio. The Ulead product crashes with no indication of failure. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards;

Wayne

AFAIK the 3ds files load into 3DS fine but it appears that other programs do have trouble. You should definately report the problem to ulead. A crash of any kind is bad news.

If the model you are importing has textures, try removing these before exporting the 3ds file from AC3D.

Does the ulead software support other formats like obj?

Andy;

Thanks for the quick reply. Here's what I've done. I created a simple sphere (wireframe/no material). I exported it to a .3DS file and tried to import it into Cool 3S PS. Cool 3D PS (Production Studio) just goes away (bang).

I've done the same test with "Anim8or" and "MeshMaker" and both work.

Ulead's Cool 3D PS also supports DirectX's .x file types.

I surely will contact Ulead with this issue. I just thought I'd start here. I hope I'm doing something wrong.

As a final note and from a novice 3Der, AC3D is the most intuitve tool I've seen. Thanks Andy.

Andy;

While waiting for my Ulead license, I've done some additional testing.

TEST A

I create a sphere in AC3D.
Export it as a .3DS.
Import directly to Uleads "Cool 3D PS"
Results: "Cool 3D PS" crashes on import .3DS (works with .x though)

TEST B

Using the same sphere created in TEST A.
Import the "Sphere.3ds" to Anim8or (a freeware 3D tool).
Results: The imported sphere imports as small pinhead sphere and
can be resized (made larger) in Anim8or.
Make sphere larger in Anim8or.
Export it from Anim8or to a .3ds.
Results: The Anim8or enlarged oject import fine into Ulead's "Cool 3D PS" OK.

Is there a scaling standard that I'm overlooking? Perhaps a variant to the .3ds specification?

Regards;

Wayne

I don;t think it's the scaling that's the problem - that's probably just different default resolutions and scaling in different programs.

You should check the sizes of the objects though. You can do this in AC3D by selecting an object and looking at the top left of the control panel. I'm not sure how to check the sizes of stuff in Anim8tor though.

Does the 3ds from Anim8tor load into AC3D?

Yes I can import a .3DS from Anim8or to AC3D. And only AC3D provides the dimension information in W|H|D. It must be the scaling between the two programs for .3DS objects. As I said before, the DirectX (.x) objects seem to work fine. Ulead's "Cool 3D PS" can import .x so I stick with that.
