Default Long file name support for export

With 3ds export, unless you use 8.3 file convention your not able to export the textures with the model.

Can long file name support be included in at least the 3ds export plugin ?

I'm pretty sure that the 8.3 limit is imposed by the 3DS format itself.

Do any 3DS experts know if this is true?

AC3D used to export long names but many 3DS loaders, including 3DS, had problems with the files.

Had a look round some site and note that the 3ds is indeed 8.3 file format.

Ok, failing that approach how about a Lightwave import/export ? I beleive that there are at least two file formats, pre 6 and 6 onwards.
