Default How to save files that have been merged

I work in a file and File-->Merge another file into it. Once I have new object positionned properly, I save the model under a new name.

But when I reopen the file the "imported" file, the one I added, is gone.

It's like when I save, it only saves the original file and not the 2nd one that was added (merged) to it.
I make sure I Select All before saving.
Thanks,

I wonder if you might be saving the files in a different location? Open, Merge and Save maintain different paths and if they are different, it might look like you lost a file.

Actually I solved the problem without understanding why it was happening.
Once I had my 2 objects in 1 file, I saved in .3ds insteand of .ac to keep both objects.
If I saved in .ac, only the original object was kept in the file.
But when I saved in .3ds then both objects remained when I reopened the file.

But once this was done I can then save in .ac and it keeps both objects indefinitly.

It's like the original file for the 2nd object had a problem with it but once it got through the process of being combined and exported in 3ds, that problem disappearred.
