Default How do I unmerge?

Ok, I've composed an object of several and merged them:

In hindsight, this may have been premature since I will likely want to define a tighter bounding box as a composition of the various "sub-objects" and develop a hierarchy.

What would be the best way to decompose a merged model?

If you haven't saved the project since you merged things, you could use Ctrl+Z to "undo" steps until you get back to where the objects were before you merged them. But, if you've taken time to make a post, I'm sure it's at least a day later and you've saved or powered off your computer since then. Sadly, you'll now have to do it "the hard way"... good news is, it might not really be that hard.

In Surface Select mode, select the surfaces of discrete parts you want to separate. You'll likely need to make use of wireframe mode to be sure of what you're selecting. With each grouping selected, use Surface/Cut Away Object to separate the selected surfaces from the greater object. Then, re-name the new surfaces as their own object in Object Select Mode. Before selecting the next group of surfaces, Lock or Hide the new(er) objects to avoid confusion.

Rinse and repeat until everything is hidden and composed of new objects.

That's working so far. Thanks, Stiglr.

One last question, how do I make the "sub-objects" children of a main object? How would I make an engine tube a child of the hull or a strut?

I'm not *sure*, but I don't think you can manage Parent Child relationships per se with the stock AC3D. You can manage "display order" and grouping though. This is managed in Tools/Heirarchy View.

Select an object in the viewports, then in the Heirarchy menu, right click it to move it up or down in the heirarchy, or to move to the head (first to display) or tail (last to display). This helps when you have transparent objects like windows, such that the windows are last and objects will display "through" the transparency.

To truly get parent/child relationships, get the X-Plane plug-in, as this has the basic animation features that include parent/child.
