Bizarre rendering effect

I am working on a waterline model of a WW I destroyer (see attachment).
You will that some surfaces that are part of the forecastle's deck are rendered in black even though they are dark grey and flat (I have checked and re-checked).
How come?

P.S: When the hull is exported to VRML 2.0, it is rendered correctly by the VRML browser.
